Marketing Campaigns and the Human Nervous System

 "911 what's your emergency?"

How does that statement make you feel?

Does it bring up any emotions?

Does it make you want to jump to action?

For me, hearing that brings up a sense of fear and panic. A sense of something gone wrong, really wrong. A sense that I need to help someone or find somebody that can help them. That is how I felt watching one of the commercials during the 2022 Super Bowl. There is an Apple commercial that plays multiple clips of 911 operators answering calls during three different emergency situations. As the commercial progresses, the victims seem more and more helpless.

Before continuing, please watch the commercial at the link below and think about how it makes you feel.

2022 Apple Commercial

Every time I watch this commercial I get the feeling of fear and a rush of many emotions. As I am learning more about my nervous system, I have realized that the rush of emotions comes from my limbic system which houses my emotions. So the fear, worry, and sadness I feel when watching the commercial comes from there. I also notice my sympathetic nervous system rev up; meaning that my "flight or fight" response is in high gear, or in other words it is how you body response to stressful or dangerous situations. For comparison, imagine you are watching a child, weather it be you child, sibling, grandkid, and all of the sudden you hear a loud, piercing scream... you are going to immediately jump to action. That is your sympathetic nervous system kicking in, which is what I feel beginning to happen as I watch the commercial until suddenly it's over and the show I am watching comes back on.
